In essence this is a large double main track, where trains can ride independently in each direction. In the visible stations trains can interchange (with some fiddling for steam engines). In the lower part a double-track triangle enables trains to turn to the other track direction. Three hidden staging yards, each having three siding tracks, connect to this track triangle. This way 10 trains can be "parked" under the layout.
The actual length of mainline track is about 50 yards in each direction, mainly because of three helixes (climbing spirals). The main track is split up in about 50 blocks (staging yards and sidings in stations included), so it should be possible to have about 30 trains running smoothly.
The freight station "Duvelle" connects to a fiddle yard and hill, and connects to some local industry: a small harbor, a mine and one other (I haven't decided on the last one yet). The passenger station "Boulroie" has two floors (10 tracks) and connects to a small depot. Finally, a small streetcar circuit connects the city to the local tourist attraction: a castle on the hill. In the city, which has a church, city hall, a fair and a shopping region, some existing buildings will be modeled.
The landscape is shelving, with two slopes and a central ridge. This ridge optically divides the layout, has a castle on top and hides the helix on the central peninsula. In the "valleys" on both sides of the ridge visitors can walk "into" the layout. On the left it looks like a canal, on the right two bridges cross it: one for the train main track, the other for the streetcar.
Enough talking about the design: take a look at the drawing now!
