Or: testing, repairing and swearing...

No single project works without a fuss: here's my ‘diary' of failures, retrying, ... In short: the setbacks and how I coped with them.
This is, too, an essential part of building "Marche-en-Bières", a part the reader of this website is entitled to know. Who knows, it might be useful for you, or merely as a comfort for your own setbacks with your own projects.

January '12: The mini-layout should be ready this year's october...but I think I should be optimistic. Small-series-production on the bumper cars is going steady. Each car has about 70 parts, times 15 cars, and at the end of the month only the last 9 parts (times A15) have to be designed and made..
It's a good thing I didn't make to many plans for the last half of this month, as it contained my 50rth birthday. FamilFamil and friends threw in quite some "surprise"-parties

February '12: The bumper cars got their first gears. I had to get more micro-engines, some of them were recycled from cellphones. Instead of trying to finnish al cars in a row, I decided to build one as a prototype. This was a good idea, as it diidn't become a functional one, but I learned a lot while building it. Meanwhile, sometimes to cool down after a disappointment, I painted the cars; The result was a very colorfull picture. Three nonn-working prototypes are parked at the back right corner.
For one of the gears I needed a 0.6 mm axis. I couldn't find pianowire in thissize, so I tried to galvanise 0,5mm wire. This was partly succesful, and the technique will be discribed in Modelspoormagazine. At the end of the month, I got the flue - not a great situation to do miniature modeling...
March '12: While waiting for some spare parts, I decided to make the tent for the bumper cars. Extra lights were nescessary, so I placed a ring of small smd-type leds. As well as a colourfull border, the attraction's name was added and (illuminated), . During curing times, I tried to get at least one car in full working order, but failed again. I'm still in doubt between small-series production and trying to build a working prototype. The latter is getting closer to the goal.
About the galvano-technique : I found a suitable subject for the magazine, and sent it to be published A white-metal figure was galvanasied with copper, and presented as a statue on the city square

April '12: Some tests with the bumper cars were frustrating, as this movie shows. Insufficient electrical contact, as well as low mechanical friction. I needed better tires and a rough floor to increase friction. I tried lots of materials and even casted silicon-based tires, but had a problem gluing the latter to the tiny metal wheels. I thought I was pretty close to a solutionl, knowing the deadline was only 6 months ahead. Balance in pressure from the cars - to the floor as well as the ceiling - seemed to be the issue: To much prevents movement, to few prevents contact.

May '12: Begin mei heb ik met het vrouwje 10 dagen vakantie in Schotland gehouden. Prachtig land, met vooral veel "lege" natuur, maar ik heb toch ook wat leuke spoorse foto's kunnen nemen. Na deze vakantie de spoorwegmodelbouw terug opnemen bleek echter een serieuze tegenvaller.
Het botsautootje, dat eind vorige maand nog vlot achteruit reed, weigerde alle dienst. Een slechte stroomafname was de eerste belangrijke oorzaak, waarbij vooral de rijvloer nogal wat schoonmaakwerk nodig had. Ondanks dat weigerde het karretje nog vlot te bollen. Na nogal wat voorzichtig plooiwerk, bleek de oorzaak ergens anders te liggen dan ik eerst dacht: Het grote (nou ja, 8 mm) tandwiel was losgekomen van zijn asje. Voor ik dat in de gaten kreeg, had ik al enkele keren het voorwielstel in en uit elkaar gehaald, waardoor alles al heel wat minder solide was geworden...
Om een lang verhaal kort te maken: ook dit botsautootje heb ik half mei tot "vierde prototype" verklaard. Het zal een mooie, zichtbare plaats krijgen op het minibaantje ... naast de botsautokraam. Ik heb intussen toch heel wat bijgeleerd, en heb nog 13 bijna-klaar-karretjes liggen. Hopelijk wordt de volgende wél goed genoeg om te rijden zoals bedoeld.
Op het einde van de maand blijft er nog een hardnekkig probleem: De voorbanden van de botsauto's. Voor zoveel mogelijk grip is gietrubber het beste materiaal, maar dat laat zich erg moeilijk kleven op de messing wieltjes. Ook de fabrikant was er (terecht?) fier op dat zijn gietrubber nergens aan kleefde... Secondenlijm leek ook bij de start de enige optie, maar dat kleeft veel te snel, waardoor het bandje moeilijk correct te plaatsen is. Andere kleefstoffen bleken ook na onderzoek te weinig te kleven. Secondenlijm vertragen leek de enige optie. Oude dergelijke lijm kleeft trager, vanuit de diepvries is dat spul ook niet snel, verdunnen, ....Alweer een evenwichtsoefening...
